Marx's saying "History repeats itself, first as tragedy and then as farce" is one of those ingrained bits of non-wisdom we have to put up with, watching history repeat and repeat as mounting tragedies. But what about Communist apologetics? How do they repeat themselves?
Once upon a time, the free press was subverted by communists, fellow travellers, sympathizers and endless quanities of dupes. Thus, Americans, especially including New York Times readers, were told Stalin's state-ordered famine was neither state-ordered nor did it lead to starvation, Mao was an agrarian, Castro a democrat, and other party lines to be found also in the Daily Worker and Pravda.
As I look at at tweet above, which pairs two genuine, recent op-eds from the NYT's "Red Century" series, maybe the saying should be: Farce repeats itself, over and over again in the New York Times -- a tragedy for our understanding of history and harbinger of worse to come.

On September 15, I participated in a panel on "Exposing the Deep State," hosted by Judicial Watch. Former Trump White House official Sebastian Gorka, the Washington Examiner's Todd Shepherd, JW's James Peterson, and I all delivered approximately 7-minute statements after which JW's lead investigator, Chris Farrell, moderated a discussion. My written statement is here.
Not sure how much "Deep State" we were able to expose in one hour, although one thing that opened up was a bright shaft of daylight between my own and Sebastian Gorka's approaches to the whole concept. To wit, Sebastian began his discussion seemingly negating the effort, "Exposing the...

Below is my prepared text for the Judicial Watch panel, "Exposing the Deep State," September 15, 2017, which I participated in along with, from left to right, Todd Shepherd of the Washington Examiner, former White House official Sebastian Gorka, moderator and Judicial Watch chief investigator Chris Farrell, and Judicial Watch attorney James Peterson.
This text is pretty close to the statement as delivered (and pretty close to the allotted seven minutes) and may be watched here.
--
I find the "Deep State" a little hard to discuss because the term itself is amorphous.
When I think of "Deep State" I think of unconstitutional powers exercised by numerous illegitimate branchlets of government way outside the “balance of powers.”
By the way, there...

Gates of Vienna has republished Fjordman's long and flowing answer to a series of questions posed by The Apricity as an "interview." I would call it an exceptional memoir of the counter-jihad by a superlative European commentator.
Originally, I planned to offer some excerpts below with a link to the complete version; however, I have ended up reposting most of the essay with my own subheads and emphases added. The complete version, plus endnotes, is here at GoV.
Fjordman's discussion begins with biographical background, including the Norwegian writer's studies and work in the Middle East in his...

President Trump and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres
UPDATE: Listen to Frank Gaffney and me discuss the Trump UN speech here, including why it is that "America First" and "American Exceptionalism" are completely separate concepts.
----
If I had to pick a title, I might call President Trump's 2017 UN address, "Something for Everyone."
For example, Trump supporters heard the words "America first" and "sovereignty" and glowed. Trump haters heard the word "sovereignty" and "American interests above all else" and ignited. So consumed were many by their own respective basking and bonfires, they failed to realize that no matter how many times Trump dropped the word "sovereignty," it was sometimes in sentences like this: "We must reject threats to...

Harry Truman in the Washington Post on December 22, 1963
--
Yesterday, I participated in an interesting panel discussion about "Exposing the Deep State." It was hosted by Chris Farrell of Judicial Watch and you can watch it here.
Needless to say, one hour is not enough to expose the "Deep State" -- particularly doing so as an observer, no matter how interested, on the outside looking in. Without whistleblowers (defectors?) galore, us civilians will always be left groping.
We can and should, however, round up the clues to its beginnings, which are surely to be found in the exponential expansion of the federal government under FDR. In his four terms, FDR and then Truman, would preside over the massive expansion of a federal workforce that included hundreds if not thousands of Soviet agents, Communists and their supporters, working all over the government, from the White House to the KGB-honeycombed wartime agencies that would soon be reconstituted as the CIA. Some were identified and bounced. According to reliable defector testimony, however, only one ring out of four was unmasked. And there may well have been more than that.

MEMRI has posted one mighty revealing clip, headlined: "Russian Ambassador in Lebanon Reminisces about the Days of the U.S.S.R.: We Cared about Human Rights More Than in Other Countries."
Right. To call this a "bald-faced lie" is to mince words. But that's not all we can extract from this display.
The exchange opens as the Russian ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Zasypkin, is discoursing in Arabic on "various kinds of socialism," and the "different experiences" of "different socialist countries." Then, seamlessly, he, the Russian ambassador, introduces the subject of human rights.
Russian amb: Take, for example, the issue of human rights. In the USSR, we cared for human rights more than in many other countries.

NB: I originally posted this in 2015. It still goes.
As the Morally Elite purge purportedly sinful symbols and statuary -- surely prepatory for the upcoming main "live" event (please don't say I didn't warn you) -- I suggest they widen their scope of destruction.
Having moved on from the purge of the Confederate battle flag -- that was soooo easy -- the Morally Elite have turned their sights to the more concretely monumental problems of statuary, schools, streets, etc., that commemorate, for example, the heroic life of Robert E. Lee.
...
To be sure, the flag and Lee stuff is so much skirmishing. The main assault on our Founding Fathers and their crummy Constitution lies just ahead.

The Fabian Society crest: a wolf in sheep's clothing
UPDATED BELOW =>
--
Interestingly enough, in the Twelth Report of the Fact-Finding Subcommittee on Un-American Activities of the California Senate, there is among the many Communists, Communist groups and front groups under discussion a case study of the John Birch Society, the group founded in the late 1950s by Robert Welch in opposition to Communism.
The John Birch Society of Robert Welch mainly survives in popular imagination for its having been "purged" by William F. Buckley from "mainstream" conservatism. This "purge" not only had the effect of shunting Robert Welch to the sidelines of conservative debate, it also cast out to the margins a wide if not Deplorable swath of Americans who embraced the tradition of "America First"-style non-interventionism and small-r republicanism which were also at the heart of conservative anti-Communism of the day.

It's a funny thing not to get a local paper. But I don't. Canceled the Washington Post again a few days ago with pledges not to succomb to that next *daily delivery deal of the century.* The last straw this time was a compound idolatry- and race- baiting frame by which to demonize tens of millions of Americans with forbears in the Confederacy masquerading as a news report: "White Virginians Feel Pressure over Lee Worship." Who needs such toxicity inside the home?
Only a small stack of Posts remains (bar-b-que kindling, crosswords for my mother) but I still found one last gem.
It was in the travel section. No, not in "How to stay safe if terror strikes while you're abroad" or "Dubai: Shopping the city's bustling gold, spice and textile marketplace." It appeared buried deep in the column inches of "Sprinting through Beijing" by Debra Bruno.

Judging by the thumbnails, Seven Days in May (1964) is an anti-anti-Communist message movie about a military takeover of the US government thwarted by liberals. Half a century later, the spectre of military coup seems to be more than a fictional conceit given that a troika of real-life generals -- Kelly, McMaster, Mattis -- appear to be running an anti-MAGA White House with a team of insurbordinate civilian cabinet secretaries. In 2010, I wrote "Hail to the Junta?" over the Pentagon's reported refusal to provide the president with a military plan to exit Afghanistan. What we are watching unfold today is far more all-encompassing....

Desk Drawer 4 is here.
Got an email the other night from a pal.
It was slugged: "Dear God in heaven, they're doing a re-enactment of the American Betrayal attacks."
Oh no, not again ...
Turns out "they" are merely David Horowitz, who, some oldtimers will recall, led a disinformation campaign against American Betrayal from his Frontpage website. It began publicly with a "take-down" called "McCarthy on Steroids" by Ron Radosh in August of 2013, which appeared in the same week as a five-part–series based on American Betrayal ran at Breitbart News. The Horowitz-led disinformation campaign ended continues to this day.
That first payload of disinformation was originally debunked at Breitbart News in three parts,...

As cultural revolutionaries in and out of government take a sledgehammer to our living core -- our history, ancestry, memory and imagination -- we see quickly there is no end to their rapacious will to destroy Us, the People. Last week, it was Robert E. Lee in a park; this week, it's Christopher Columbus in a circle. Soon, it will be George Washington as a capital. There is no end in sight to this American Cultural Revolution, not while its leading edge of hysteria is still building.
Across the pond, jealous cultural revolutionaries are considering some cleansing of their own by possibly removing the statue (above) of one of Britain's greatest heroes, Lord Nelson, from London's Trafalgar Square -- named for the epic sea Battle of Trafalgar, which Nelson won, and where he perished.

I confess to some puzzlement over the framework of Dinesh D'Souza's new book, which I recently picked up. It's called The Big Lie: Exposing the Nazi Roots of the American Left.
Whither the Communist roots of the American Left? Seemingly gone in a Sieg Heil, along with FDR's admiration for (and manipulation by) "Uncle Joe" Stalin and the rest, although I will have to wait and see how it all comes out.
D'Souza sets out to "turn the tables on the Democratic Left and show that they -- not Trump --are the real fascists. They are the ones who use Nazi bullying and intimidation tactics and subscribe to a full-blown fascist ideology."
But who are the "real fascists" anyway? Nazism,...

I have been watching the case of Sebastien Jallamion for about long as Baron Bodissey, who, thankfully, has written the following introduction to the video. I am out of words.
We’ve posted previously about Sébastien Jallamion, a French policeman who was drummed out of the force for an anti-ISIS post on Facebook that was considered “hate speech”.
After he was cashiered, Mr. Jallamion was attacked by several “youths” and beaten very badly. Later he was prosecuted for his “crime”. Then, when his attackers were finally taken to court, they walked free after receiving the lightest possible slap on the wrist.
After his first prosecution, the judge refused to impose jail time. However, the prosecution appealed the leniency of the lower court, and the appeals court eventually imposed...

After some time off the grid, I've begun to come up to speed on the reax to President Trump's Western civ speech, which burns with an intensity mismatched with those few airy gusts of pro-West rhetoric Trump delivered in Warsaw last week. For example, that man of letters, Jonathan Capehart, declared himself "triggered" by Trump's having noting that "We," the Western world, "write symphonies." The lovely Amanda Marcotte (she who described abortion as akin to removing a cavity and babies as time-sucking monsters) trashed Trump's address as "alt-rigth" and "white nationalist rhetoric." I am sure they would all say the same of the Constitution.

Why we persist in calling Normandy the "second front" is a long story all about what we would today call "Russian influence." It is laid out in American Betrayal, my book closely examining such "Russian influence." The book digs into the historical record to seek a better understanding of what American government officials,...

It seems to be drawing the kind of people who used to deny "Russia collusion" to the death, even if its name was Alger Hiss.
But some things never change: they're still pushing the rest of the "commie" program -- the glories of state-run health care, the shame of white privilege, the evils of Donald Trump ... who, by pulling out of the Paris Accords, has emerged as the biggest threat to that same communist/Marxist/progressive/globalist/Alinskyite/socialist program since Ronald Reagan. I remember a famous exchange Milosevic had with his judge. It was 2002, and, still, the closest Western consciousness came to beheading lay somewhere between the history of the French Revolution two centuries ago, and the absurdity of Lewis Carroll's Red Queen.
Milosevic was trying to show what jihad looked like, which, in his war, was a beheaded Serbian soldier.
MILOSEVIC: These are crimes from the 26th of March, 1992, in Sijekovac.
The units (Mujahedin) crossed the Sava River and slaughtered the Serbs. Please put the big picture on the overhead projector.

Classic private-public economic fascism + infusions of Islamic cash = "Islamofascism."

He writes:
Merely calling Democrats out on this farce is not going to end it. Thanks to President Trump’s unruliness, it is working too well. So, I have three suggestions.
First, the Justice Department should appoint a special counsel to investigate the potential abuse of government surveillance powers for the purposes of political spying and leaks to the media. It's not reporting, it's suppressing.
Take today's headline "news" from CNN:
"A Texas congressman just said something deeply irresponsible about Seth Rich"
Yes, that's a headline. No doubt it was crafted by a snowflake who got a start telling on kids back in kindergarten.
And never mind that the congressman, Blake Farenthold (R-TX), didn't mention Seth Rich and was very clearly trying to make a completely separate and extremely crucial point.
Thus, CNN had its work cut out for it -- suppression, not reporting -- as indicated in the subhead about the cable network's hero-supressors:
"Lawmaker confronted over debunked story"
Since his 'n' her suppressors John Berman and Poppy Harlow (real name?) were so good at their craft, CNN...

Former DCIA Brennan, he who voted Communist in 1976, has been testifying about "Russian influence" in the House today.
At about 31:00 here, Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) starts to build his question, mentioning the "Russian playbook," how Russians try to build relationships, especially with influential Americans, and how that's one of the things the CIA is looking out for.
Wenstrup continued: "So I'm just trying to understand process here a little bit, what sets up a red flag, what type of conversation do you hear that says, hmm, maybe we need to take a little bit further look into this, or refer it on.
Wenstrup then harkened back to the previous election when a hot mic picked up That Exchange between President Obama and President Medvedev. The congressman related the two famous lines.

Now at The Daily Caller
I really, really do not want to waste a lot of time on Donald Trump's Saudi Arabian visit; however, for the record, which is still important, it was a nightmare.
The images could not have been more ghastly.
The substance could not have been more repulsive.
The nation-to-nation exchange could not have been more shameful: Yet another American president, a decade and a half after 9/11, lying to himself and the entire world to declare that Islam is wonderful, it's just extremism that's a mortal threat, in exchange for hundreds of millions of Saudi petrodollars in arms deals. The $100 million pledged by Saudi Arabia and the UAE to "empower women entrepreneurs" through a World Bank "initiative" (slush fund?) Ivanka Trump is associated with was particularly ugly. It turned the president's daughter into a pitchwoman for these very nations whose Islamic laws and culture recognize women as chattel. How they must have rolled on the tent floor after the pathetic American delegation was en route to Israel, a nation Saudi Arabia does not recognize.

June 14, 2016: The Washington Post reports "Russian government hackers penetrated the computer network of the Democratic National Committee." On what did the paper base this claim? The Post cites "committee officials and security experts who responded to the breach."
These "security experts" are with CrowdStrike, a private cyber security firm hired and paid by the DNC.
While reading the following chronology, it is important to bear in mind that the FBI has never examined the DNC computer network because the DNC prohibited the FBI from doing so. Also, that the FBI, under former Director Comey, not to mention former President Obama and the "Intelligence Community," thought this was perfectly ok.
Another point: According to a NYT story that...

Now at The Daily Caller
Flipping back the pages of my proverbial notepad I find a fair amount about Robert Mueller and his Bush-to-Obama tenure at the FBI.
Despite the rose petals bestrewing his path back to DC as special counsel, it was not a pretty thing. Summing up -- as Patrick Poole began here in 2012, as former FBI special agent John Guandolo does here -- Mueller's FBI tenure should be remembered in large part for having been one long "Muslim outreach" to combat so-called Islamophobia, one long purge of Islamo-realism; and literally so, as when Mueller's FBI purged lecturers and training materials for their supposed offensiveness to Muslims...
