Brussels Journal reports this week that Austrian politician Susanne Winter has actually been indicted on charges of "incitement and degradation of religious symbols and religious agitation"--or, as the Austrians so trippingly put it, Verhetzung und Herabwürdigung religiöser Symbole. If convicted, she faces TWO YEARS IN PRISON.

What did she do? The charges stem from THINGS SHE SAID. These include:

Islam is “a totalitarian system of domination that should be cast back to its birthplace on the other side of the Mediterranean.”

This is called an opinion. (And it's not a bad idea, at least if you're into fashion, free speech, monogamy, women's rights, homosexuality, dancing, Frank Loesser, free speech, pork rinds,  aetheism, champagne, and assorted non-Muslim religions ....  )

She also warned for “a Muslim immigration tsunami,” saying that “in 20 or 30 years, half the population of Austria will be Muslim” if the present immigration policies continue.

And the legal objection is....?

Mohammed was a "warlord" who wrote the Koran in "between epileptic fits."

Didn't some Israeli researcher recently come up with Moses being high on drugs when taking down the Ten Commandments? Has he been indicted?

Here, as reported in January by DPA, are some more of her remarks.

Susanne Winter, a candidate for the Freedom Party in local elections in Graz in south-eastern Austria, said on Sunday that Mohammed's marriage to a 6-year-old girl would make the prophet a 'paedophile in today's system.'

Um, isn't that true? Would a marriage to a six-year-old girl make anyone a pedophile under current law and morality?...

Winter later justified her attacks. 'There is widespread child abuse by Muslim men,' she was quoted as saying by the newspaper Oesterreich.

'Why can't I say this? That has nothing to do with hate speech. We want neither Austrian nor foreign paedophiles. I did not want to incite hatred, or offend a religious community,' she said.

Why? Because you live in Austria, of course--land of Freud, Schnitzler, Rilke, Kafka, Billy Wilder,  Fritz Lang, Erich von Stroheim, Otto Preminger, Czerny, Mahler, MOZART, Strauss, Frederich von Hayek, Karl Popper ... oh, and Hitler.
Austria's authorities were investigating whether Winter's remarks constituted incitement to hatred, a spokesman from the prosecutor's office said. [DW:  Winter has been indicted.] If found guilty, Winter could face up to two years in prison.

Politicians from all other factions sharply denounced Winter's remarks and called for her resignation.

Why isn't this a Major News Story about Our World Today?
