Many times I am asked by readers exercised by the fallen state of our world:, What can we do?
Here is something easy. Please send a 30th birthday card to Sgt. Derrick Miller (above with his daughter), who has been unjustly condemned to life in prison with possibility of parole for "murder" in the Afghanistan war zone. Some of the appalling details are here and here.
Derrick's lovely mother Renee Myers writes:
Hello Friends and Family!
I hope everyone is doing well and all that you love is safe and sound :o)
I wanted to take a moment to ask an enormous favor for my son Derrick. As you may or may not know, he is still sitting in Ft. Leavenworth prison wrongly convicted of premeditated murder in the wake of a combat zone interrogation gone horribly wrong. We are still working to appeal his conviction, and are looking forward to the day when he can finally return home to his loved ones where he belongs.
In the meantime, an important day is rapidly approaching on July 1st...Derrick's 30th birthday.
He will be spending yet another birthday separated from everyone and everything he cares about. I do not, however, want him to ever believe for a moment that he has been forgotten.
It is with that one wish that I write this message to you, in the hopes that you will be able to take a moment to lift his spirits, encourage his heart, and remind him that better days are indeed ahead. If each of you could send him a birthday card - nothing fancy or elaborate required - I think it would do wonders to make that day a little brighter, and more than just another 24 hours of intolerable confinement. Here is his mailing address - the sooner you can mail the cards, the better:
Derrick A. Miller 89775
1300 N. Warehouse Road
Ft. Leavenworth, KS 66027-2304
Even if you think the card you send won't matter, or might be late, send it anyway.
Every one of them - no matter when they come - is a welcome acknowledgement of the fact that his life has purpose and meaning, and that his continuing sacrifice is appreciated.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and may God bless you all.
Yours in Christ,
Reneé
